Fritters: Homeade donuts, cheaper & healthier

 Friday, December 30, 2011

I love sweets, as many already know. Sadly it's hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle & eat lots of them. I love donuts. But donuts are loaded w/ sugar at the stores & shops & are full of calories & artificial ingredients. However you can have some fritters that will curb that sweet tooth, save you money, artificiality & a trip to the donut shop. Here is what you will need:

1 c unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 c cane sugar (not brown)
1 large egg (white or brown)
1 tbsp of melted butter (if low fat, you can afford to do 2)
1 rounded tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, I prefer none)
1/2 c hormone-free buttermilk (whole or 2% milk can suffice)

In a medium sized pot pour in canola oil, filling the pot halfway. Turn the oil on medium heat & allow to warm while you combine the ingredients for the batter.

In a medium sized bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon & salt. In a small bowl beat together egg & milk until combined. Pour the egg & milk mixture into the dry ingredients & stir togther. Add butter & vanilla into the mixture, stirring, not beating.

After all ingredients have been combined, take a miniature icecream scoop or a teaspoon (metal, not the measuring spoon) & dip in oil. Scoop desired sized amounts of batter & then drop into the oil. When the batter comes to the top of the oil, if the fritter does not turn over itself, take a metal spoon or tongs & turn it over on the other side (about 2-3 minutes). Then remove from oil & place on paper towels. Allow them to cool for 3-5 minutes then sift confectioners sugar on the top if you so desire. Enjoy!

***In order to prevent overeating, the batter can be stored in the refrigerator up to one week or frozen in an airtight container.***

Jump-start Weight-loss: Precursor to Exercise

 Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Many of us know people who desire to lose weight but just can't seem to get it going. Often times people need to lose weight for various health reasons but the ailments that they need to lose the weight for, are the very ailments that prevent them from doing the exercise needed to burn the calories & fat that contribute to the ailment. For example; one might suffer from severe back pain. Often times ppl w/ back pain are overweight or obese. If a person has back pain from obesity, the weight loss needs to take place for the back to be relieved. Well if their back bothers them so much that they can't exercise then what are they supposed to do? Seems hopeless doesn't it? Well there is yet hope (Romans 8:25).

Although a healthy diet can only go so far without exercise, it is a great way for beginners or morbidly obese ppl to jump start their weightloss journey. Often times when you see morbidly obese ppl on television they are put on a very strict diet. Alot of times these men/women lose hundreds of lbs just from the healthy eating alone. A change in diet will display IMMEDIATE changes in one's weight/health b/c the shock to the body takes place during the 1st 6 weeks of lifestyle change. These immediate changes will not only make you lose weight, they will shrink your stomach & help detoxify your system. Follow these steps & I guarantee you will lose at least 15 lbs in one month's time without exercise.

  • CLEANSE, CLEANSE, CLEANSE. DETOXIFY YOUR BODY. There are many colon & full body detoxification cleanses out there. (Please contact me privately for recommendations. Don't want to post names on the blog & end up gettin sued.) There are ones that you can purchase at the store & there is also the master cleanse (which is not for everybody), along with various teas & oils that will help aid in this process. Why detox though?
    • it will help purify your system. We eat, drink, & breathe toxins & poisons on a daily basis & these toxins need to be removed from our bodies. Your body releases toxins several ways, through the skin, breathing, through urinating & pooping.
    • A healthy colon is essential to long life as well as weight loss. Colon cleanses target the colon specifically b/c lots of poisons & disease lie in the colon if not pushed out. Many of us have lbs & lbs of waste in us that we don't even know are there. I promise you if you clean your colon you'll lose weight & you will feel revitalized.
    • A lot of aches, pains & ailments come from unhealthy eating & a system that needs to be cleansed. I can attest to this fact. The poisons & toxins that are in our bodies affect not only our weight but our ability to function &l ive life comfortably. Detoxing will aid in the healing of the ailments. Cleansing will help relieve these ailments that hinder you from exercising.
    • Alot of skin problems that we have are caused by our eating as well. The release of those toxins will restore beautiful & bright skin to the detoxer (if u will).
  • Watch your meals. For 2 weeks eat only 3 meals with 2 snacks (fruit or vegetables ONLY) & drink nothing but water. If you have to have something with flavor ONLY drink 100% fruit/vegetable juice. No fried foods, no sweets or junk. No gravies, heavy cream sauces, white bread or pastas, no red meat, or pork. Your protein serving (fish, poultry, nuts) should be NO BIGGER than the size of the palm of your hand. Your starch should be half that size & your vegetable/fruit should be twice that size. This will shrink your stomach & jump start your weightloss. I guarantee you will lose at least 6 lbs in 2 weeks.
  • DRINK WATER. I would recommend drinking nothing but water & 100% juices. Alot of weight gain comes fromt he added sugars that are PACKED into many juice drinks that you see in the stores. Water will flush your system out, clean your urinary tract, & even help promote natural bowel movements. Water works at lukewarm temperatures but drinking ice cold water makes the body burn calories to warm it up so this is recommended.
    •  Crystal Light & Wylers flavored drinks that you mix into your bottled water are not good for you either. They're a subtle way of killing you without raising your blood sugar levels. They're filled w/ maltodextrin, dextrose, maltose &  all of these other ingredients from corn which are equivalent to high fructose cornsyrup.
  • Watch your salt intake. Salt makes you retain water/water weight which makes you heavier than you really are. Water retention is often times seen in the feet & ankles. It usually causes swelling in those areas & leaves a dent in the skin when you touch it. Water retention is often times a sign of hypertension.
Although diet alone will not suffice for long term weight loss, it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for it. Exercising alone will also not suffice, especially if your diet consists of trash & garbage. Exercise & diet by themselves can only do so much. Either way, there are sacrifices. Exercise is essential to promoting cardiovascular health & mainting healthy weight no matter what size you are. Skinny ppl need to exercise too.

These tips are intended to motivate those who have ailments preventing them from exercising, to take the necessary steps to find relief for those ailments through detoxification & healthy eating so that they can begin exercising. This is also for the morbidly obese person who is unable to exercise that he/she will lose enough weight to allow body movement & exercise.

I hope this information is helpful & motivational to those who may fit the profile of any of these examples. Please post comments & testimonials. Blessings!

Flourless Organic Peanut butter cookies

 Saturday, April 16, 2011

If you're like me you enjoy desserts. However, the reality is that desserts are usually filled with stripped, refined & chemicalized sucrose (white sugar) along w/ bleached all-purpose flour & artificial ingredients. Here is a quick & easy, FIVE-ingredient recipe for delicious organic peanut butter cookies.

1 c organic salted or unsalted peanut butter
1/2 c organic cane sugar
1/2 c organic brown sugar
1 organic brown egg
Dash of salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mixed the ingredients until combined together in a medium bowl (in any order). Spoon desired sized scoops of batter onto sprayed cookie sheet & bake for 8-10 minutes. Enjoy!

[This recipe can be altered for an organic or non-organic cookie. Natural, non-certified organic ingredients will suffice. You could use white sugar & white eggs if so desirable. If using non-organic brown sugar, use brown cane sugar, as regular brown sugar is white sugar with molasses added to it.]

***Please note that when using organic or natural peanut butter that the batter will be looser, especially since this is a flourless cookie.***

Bright & sweet fruit salad

 Thursday, March 31, 2011

Here is a fruit salad recipe that I threw together that turned out to be delicious.

1/3 c mandarin oranges (in 100% juice not syrup)
1/3 c sliced strawberries
1/3 c green grapes
1/4 organic vanilla-flavored Greek Yogurt
Honey

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, flavanoids, vitamin A, the B vitamins, amino acids, beta-carotene, pectin, potassium, folic acid, calcium, iodine, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, manganese, chlorine and iron.

Strawberries are an excellent source of dietary fiber and Vitamins C and K. They are a very good source of manganese, pantothenic acid, vitamin B1, and iodine. They are a good source of folic acid, biotin, vitamin B6 & antioxidants.

Grapes are rich sources of vitamins A, C, B6 and folate in addition to essential minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium. They also contain flavonoids.

Greek yogurt is triply strain to remove more of the whey which makes it thicker. Greek yogurt is higher in protein, lower than standard yogurt in carbohydrates & sodium. It is also loaded with Live & Active Cultures (Probiotics) which aid in healthy & regular digestion.

Honey is great natural source of carbohydrates & is also an immunity system builder & contains antioxidant along w/ antibacteria properties which health improve digestion & fight off disease.

It's better when the oranges are drained real good. I put the fruit on top of the yogurt & drizzled with a little honey. With a slice of Ezekiel 4:9 (bread) toast, 1 brown egg & a glass of water you've got a delicious, nutritious & fiberful breakfast!

[1 egg (brown or white) has 71% (more than 2/3) of your recommended daily cholesterol intake. Egg beaters or plain egg whites without the yolk are a great substitute, yet still provided plenty of protein. There is a brand of brown eggs that I reccomend that has only 57% of your daily cholestorol intake (inbox me for the name). I also recommend that you use a low fat or fat free Greek yogurt..]

***Diabetics could alternately use plain Greek yogurt rather than vanilla & maybe reduce the fruits to 1/4 of a cup rather than 1/3 of a cup, as well as being less liberal with the honey or eliminating the honey all together so you can have the vanilla-flavor from the yogurt.***

About Whole-health and Body, in Christ: The Introduction

 Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Whole-health and Body, in Christ (W.B.C.) is about the Believer & his/her quest to become whole, perfect & entire in God. We were saved by His grace, through faith in His Son (Eph. 2:8) and this same grace follows us in EVERY endeavor we make to please the Lord. God not only desires for us to be pure, holy, & sanctified spiritually but He also desires for us to be healthy & fit to serve Him in every way.

3 John 2 "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."

W.B.C. admonishes all believers to embrace God's medicine; nature. Many Christians (especially Christians who are very active in a local congregation) go their entire lives unaware of the role they play in being a good steward over their physical bodies. Yes, please continue to pray for good health but take action also. I know that from my experiences, many African American church goers are riddled with disease & sickness in their bodies due to poor diets & lack of exercise. It amazes me how many Black church-goers that I see who are morbidly obese or have hypertension resulting in poor blood circulation & strokes, high cholestorol resulting in heart attacks & valve & artery problems, & high insulin levels resulting in diabetes. Enough of the Sunday soulfood dinners every week & the Popeye's chicken or Hometown Buffets/Ryan's/Golden Corral after every Sunday service. Enough w/ the chicken fries, fish fries, & bake sales people. Get it together now. Many Black churches encourage Christians to pray for the Lord to heal their diseases, which He is able to & will if He sees fit as the word tells us (Psalms 103:3), however the word admonishes us to honor the Lord in our bodies to begin with (1 Cor. 6:19-20), which many Black preachers fail to do.

I myself am what many would consider obese. You may think: "How can an obese person admonish ANYONE to be in good health?" Simple: by changing their lifestyle. With God's grace, I am 50 lbs lighter than I was in May of 2010 & my Body Mass Index (BMI) has decreased by 7%. Not only have I lost weight but my complexion is literally shades lighter & my natural hair has grown significantly. (See youtube link below) This was my movitation to start this blog. Need I say more? Don't fall for the okey doke; just b/c you're thin doesn't mean you're healthy. Plenty of thin Americans die from all kinds of diseases. Be not deceived. Although I am aspiring to be much smaller than I am now, the progress has been significant & the drive to continue on is even more significant. Not to sound cliche, it's not where you've been or where you are; it's where you're going.

To all believers who are in the process or have embarked upon a journey of whole health & physical fitness, good job! Know that you can do all things through Christ which strengthens you :). Please be encouraged brethren. I know it is hard but the same Spirit Who raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit Who shall quicken your mortal body (Rom. 8:11).

Stay tuned for updates, recipes, regimens, tips & testimonials as I (we) continue on the path to righteousness, revitalization, renewed minds & health!

Godspeed
